Introduction

This paper addresses two connected areas of business which all managers need to be familiar with. The first is Supply Chain Management and the second is Digital Business. Digital Business discusses technology developments that are not only changing how our businesses operate but are ushering in novel business models with the use of data analytics software. Both the digitisation of operations and digital business models have implications for a company’s supply chain. Therefore, the first half of the paper deals with Supply Chain Management while the second half deals with Digital Business topics.

Paper Description

Today's manager increasingly needs to be familiar with emerging digital business technologies and the opportunities they provide, because every business is a digital business, whether it chooses to be or not. This paper will prepare you to be at the forefront of this disruptive technological change. It will also provide you with the necessary skills to help businesses today prepare for the business environment of tomorrow.

The key focus of the Digital Business part of this paper is for you to become familiar enough with contemporary business/data technologies so that you are equipped to advise your management colleagues on the key strengths and challenges of these technologies, and also to be able to communicate with the technology specialists.

Serving as the backbone of digital business, supply chain management spans all the processes in a business required to purchase materials, produce a product (or service), bring the product or service to the customer, sell it to the customer, and look after the customer once the sale is concluded. It is an overarching business function that requires a holistic approach. The goal of the Supply Chain Management part of this paper is to equip participants with an appreciation of the critical role of the supply chain and a deep understanding of the interdependencies and trade-offs that could spell success or disaster for a business.

The Supply Chain Management topics focus on matching the right supply chain strategy to different business models, building resilience into supply chains, and appreciating the influence that external factors could have on a company’s supply chain. These topics should equip you to advise management regarding possible supply chain improvements or warn them about the consequences that certain business decisions could have on supply chain effectiveness.

Paper Structure

This paper will be taught using a variety of online and in-class teaching and learning strategies that give you the flexibility to participate in discussion sessions and participate online.

Classes are divided between Lecture and Lab works. A combination of learning activities are used to assist your understanding, answer questions, analyse cases, and provide insights that help you 'scaffold' learning. Recorded video lectures, online content, and required reading will be prescribed.

Whether you attend in-class or on Zoom, sessions are synchronous**, meaning that it is suggested that you participate during the time scheduled slot. Although lectures are recorded, group/practical activities cannot be recorded and part of your learning will happen during these activities. Thus, if you are not able to synchronously participate in the class, it is expected that you would be responsible for using the online resources to finish the study and the assessments.
